QuMaS

QuMaS is a is a collaborative effort of the Universities of Mainz, Frankfurt and Heidelberg that coordinates interdisciplinary research on magmatic processes in the broadest sense, from the generation of magma in the Earth’s mantle through its eruption in volcanoes and how that impacts the atmosphere and climate.

With our group, we investigate the initial stages of the dehydration process in both mafic and felsic systems and the consequent melt transport, dike propagation and magma ascent in general. The key idea is to couple both, chemical processes and deformation and investigate the individual questions by coupling deformation experiments and numerical simulations.

The key questions are:

  • Where and how does melting start?
  • How do heterogeneities dictate where melt will go?
  • What is the link between deformation and melt generation/extraction?
